Background of the Study
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential for ensuring nurses’ safety, particularly during infectious disease outbreaks and other high-risk scenarios. Proper knowledge and use of PPE are critical for preventing exposure to harmful pathogens and reducing occupational injuries (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023).
At Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto, nurses regularly encounter situations requiring the use of PPE, including surgical procedures, infectious disease management, and patient care. However, gaps in knowledge, improper usage, and limited access to PPE compromise their safety and the quality of care provided. This study assesses nurses’ knowledge and use of PPE, providing insights into areas requiring improvement (Bello & Musa, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical importance of PPE, many nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto, lack adequate knowledge of its proper use. This gap is exacerbated by inconsistent training, limited access to PPE, and weak enforcement of safety protocols. As a result, nurses face increased risks of exposure to infectious agents and other workplace hazards.
Understanding nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding PPE is essential for developing targeted interventions to enhance safety and compliance with standard protocols.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nurses’ knowledge of personal protective equipment at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto.
2. To evaluate the extent and effectiveness of PPE use among nurses.
3. To recommend strategies for improving knowledge and use of PPE among nurses.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of knowledge about PPE among nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto?
2. How effectively do nurses use PPE in their daily practices?
3. What strategies can enhance nurses’ knowledge and use of PPE?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto, have inadequate knowledge of PPE.
2. Improper usage of PPE is prevalent among nurses at the facility.
3. Targeted training programs and policy enforcement can improve PPE knowledge and use.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto, and their knowledge and use of PPE. It excludes other healthcare providers and facilities. Limitations include potential response bias and variability in PPE availability during data collection.
